The temperatures of red supergiants in low-metallicity environments

چکیده
The temperatures of red supergiants (RSGs) are expected to depend on metallicity (Z) in such a way that lower-Z RSGs warmer. In this work, we investigate the Z-dependence Hayashi limit by analysing low-Z galaxy Wolf-Lundmark-Mellote (WLM), and compare with higher-Z environments Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Large (LMC). We determine effective temperature ($T_{\textrm{eff}}$) each star fitting their spectral energy distributions, as observed VLT+SHOOTER, MARCS model atmospheres. find average $T_{\textrm{eff}_{\textrm{WLM}}}=4400\pm202$ K, $T_{\textrm{eff}_{\textrm{SMC}}}=4130\pm103$ $T_{\textrm{eff}_{\textrm{LMC}}}=4140\pm148$ K. From population synthesis analysis, although Geneva evolutionary models reproduce trend qualitatively, these systematically too cool. speculate our results can be explained inapplicability standard solar mixing length RSGs.

The Effective Temperatures and Physical Properties of Magellanic Cloud Red Supergiants: The Effects of Metallicity
We present moderate-resolution optical spectrophotometry of 36 red supergiants (RSGs) in the LMC and 39 RSGs in the SMC. Using the MARCS stellar atmosphere models to fit this spectrophotometry, we determine the reddenings, effective temperatures and other physical properties, such as bolometric luminosity and effective stellar radii, and compare these to stellar evolutionary models. Current add...
متن کاملUnderstanding B-type supergiants in the low metallicity
Despite a resurgence of effort over the last decade in the area of massive stars there is still ambiguity over their evolutionary path, contamination of their surface abundances and the behaviour of their stellar winds. Here 10 SMC B-type supergiants are analysed applying a unified model atmosphere code FASTWIND to intermediate resolution spectra from the ESO Multi Mode Instrument (EMMI) on the...
متن کاملRed Supergiants in the Local Group
Galaxies in the Local Group span a factor of 15 in metallicity, ranging from the super-solar M31 to the Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM) galaxy, which is the lowest-metallicity (0.1Z⊙) Local Group galaxy currently forming stars. Studies of massive star populations across this broad range of environments have revealed important metallicitydependent evolutionary trends, allowing us to test the accurac...
متن کاملPost-red Supergiants
The yellow hypergiants are found in a stage between the massive Red Supergiants and the Wolf-Rayet stars. This review addresses current issues concerning the evolution of massive stars, concentrating on the transitional postRed Supergiant phase. Few yellow hypergiants are known and even fewer show direct evidence for having evolved off the Red Supergiant branch. Indeed, only two such rare objec...
متن کاملThe Physical Properties of Red Supergiants
Red supergiants (RSGs) are a He-burning phase in the evolution of moderately massive stars (10-25M⊙). For many years, the assumed physical properties of these stars placed them at odds with the predictions of evolutionary theory. We have recently determined new effective temperatures and luminosities for the RSG populations of galaxies with a factor of ∼8 range in metallicity, including the Mil...
